Banners & Building Hoarding

A banner is the quickest way to say something big. Ours are printed to the size you actually need rather than a stock drop, then hemmed all round and eyeletted so they hang straight and stay put — whether that is three metres over a shop door or a full elevation on scaffold.

What you get

Banners & Hoarding, done properly

For anything on a building we pick the material to suit the site: solid PVC where it is sheltered, mesh where the wind needs somewhere to go, and a pole or frame system where the banner should be tensioned rather than tied. Site hoarding is printed in panels to your board layout, so the joins land where the boards join instead of straight through your logo. We survey it, make it and fit it, access equipment included.

  • Printed to your exact size, hemmed and eyeletted all round
  • Mesh lets the wind through on exposed elevations
  • Pole and frame systems hold large banners tensioned flat
  • Hoarding printed in panels that line up with your boards
Before you order

What should you know before ordering banners & building hoarding?

Do you need a PVC or a mesh banner?

Mesh, if the banner is going somewhere exposed. Mesh is perforated, so the wind passes through it instead of pulling at the fixings, which is why BD Signs uses it high on buildings, on scaffold and along open railings. Solid PVC carries denser colour and suits shop fronts, sheltered walls and indoor use. Tell us where it is going and we will pick the material from the site, not the price list.

How big should a banner be?

As big as the fixing points allow, with the lettering sized for the distance it is read from. A banner over a door is read from across the street; one on a scaffold elevation is read from the far end of the road. BD Signs prints to the size you need rather than a stock drop, so measure between the fixing points instead of guessing the overall size.

How will the banner be fixed?

Decide that before it is printed, because it changes how the banner is finished. Banners that are tied up are hemmed all round and eyeletted. Large banners that must sit flat go into a pole or frame system and are tensioned. For site hoarding, BD Signs lays the print out to your board layout so each join falls on a board edge, not across your logo.

How it is made

How does BD Signs make banners & building hoarding?

Designed in-house, manufactured in our own factory, fitted by our own teams. 30 years in the industry.

  1. Step 1

    Survey and measure

For a building, scaffold or hoarding job we survey the site first: the size, the fixing points, how exposed it is and what access is needed. For a simple shop or railing banner, your measurements and a photo are enough.

  2. Step 2

    Artwork at full size

Our studio sets the artwork at the finished size, with the lettering scaled to the reading distance. Hoarding is split into panels that match your boards. Nothing prints until you have approved the proof.

  3. Step 3

    Print and finish

The banner is printed in our own factory on PVC or mesh to suit the site, then hemmed all round and eyeletted so it hangs straight — or finished to fit the pole or frame system that will tension it.

  4. Step 4

    Fitting

Our own teams fit building banners, pole systems and site hoarding, access equipment included. Smaller banners go out ready to tie onto railings or over a doorway, with the eyelets already in place.

Side by side

Is a PVC or a mesh banner right for your site?

Both are printed to size, hemmed and eyeletted. The difference is how they deal with wind and how solid the print looks close up.

Compare PVC banner Mesh banner
Wind Solid, so it catches the wind — best where the site is sheltered Perforated, so wind passes through — suits exposed elevations, scaffold and open fences
Print Dense, solid colour that holds up close to Slightly lighter look up close; reads well from a distance
Best for Shop fronts, sheltered walls, indoor use and events under cover Building elevations, scaffold wraps, railings at outdoor shows
Fixings Need to be strong enough for the full wind load on a solid sheet Still need proper fixings, but the load on them is lower
Safety and standards

Do banners need consent, and how should they be fixed?

Outdoor banners are advertisements under the Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) (England) Regulations 2007. Some temporary banners have deemed consent, provided they meet the conditions for their class — on size, position and how long they stay up. Others need express consent from the local planning authority before they go up. The government's planning guidance on advertisements explains the categories, and your council can tell you which applies.

A large banner behaves like a sail. The fixings, and whatever they are fixed to, have to take the wind load on the whole sheet. On scaffold, the scaffold contractor should know about the banner before it goes up, because sheeting adds load that the scaffold design has to allow for. Mesh reduces that load; it does not remove it.

Banners & Building Hoarding FAQ

What do people ask about banners & building hoarding?

Can you print a banner to an exact size?

Yes. Every BD Signs banner is printed to the size you need rather than cut from a stock drop, then hemmed all round and eyeletted. Give us the width and height between the fixing points, or let us measure it, and the banner is made to fit that space — so it hangs straight without folded corners or slack in the middle.

Can construction site hoarding carry our branding?

Yes. Hoarding is printed in panels to your board layout, so the joins fall where the boards meet and never through a logo or a line of text. A building site is fenced off for months, which makes the hoarding one of the largest adverts a project gets. BD Signs surveys the run, prints it and fits it with our own teams.

What is a banner pole system for?

Holding a large banner flat. A tied banner can sag between eyelets and flap in the wind; a pole or frame system tensions it so it reads like a sign rather than a sheet. BD Signs uses them across frontages and where the banner will stay up for a long time. When the message changes, the poles stay and only the printed banner is replaced.
