Built-Up Letters
3D fabricated letters in acrylic or metal, illuminated or plain.
Built-Up Letters detailsSheffield is a hard place to sell a cheap sign, and quite rightly. This is a steel city, and a stainless fascia that has been folded badly gets noticed here faster than anywhere else we work. That suits us — we fabricate our own metal rather than buying it in flat-pack.
Forty miles up the M1 — Sheffield is a comfortable day for our fitting teams.

The trading pitches are distinct and they want different things. Kelham Island and Division Street are independent, industrial and confident, and they carry raw steel, halo-lit letters and hand-made work extremely well. Ecclesall Road and Crookes are neighbourhood high streets where the sign has to work in the dark on a wet evening. Meadowhall and the retail parks are a scale and specification problem altogether.
We work in stainless, brass, aluminium and acrylic, powder-coated to any RAL or Pantone, and we cut and fold in our own factory. Halo-lit letters on a brick wall, fret-cut steel panels, push-through acrylic — all of it drawn, made and installed by us, with the survey done before anybody quotes a number.
We work across Sheffield and the rest of South Yorkshire. If your site is somewhere else, ask — we manufacture in Nottingham and install UK-wide.
Two things matter when you buy a sign. That it gets you noticed, and that it still looks like that in ten years. Most of what separates a good sign from a cheap one is in the parts you never see — the gauge of the metal, the weld, the fixings and the lamps. Here is how that plays out on a Sheffield frontage.
This is a steel city and a badly folded return gets noticed here faster than anywhere we work. We cut and fold stainless, brass and aluminium ourselves, dress the welds and finish the edges. Halo-lit stainless letters on brick are hard to beat, and they still look right in ten years.
Ecclesall Road, Crookes and Hillsborough do a lot of their trade after dark in poor weather. That is an illumination problem — even spread with no hot spots burning through the face, and enough contrast that the name is legible through rain rather than a bright smear.
Powder-coated rather than wet-sprayed, sealed at every seam, and the right grade of stainless for the exposure. On a hillside frontage taking wind and rain from one direction for twenty years, the specification matters more than the design does.
Sheffield is full of converted works where brick, stone and steel frame all sit in the same elevation and take fixings completely differently. We survey the substrate and specify the fixing before the sign is drawn — the opposite way round to how signs come off walls.
Exterior signage takes the weather, the light and the traffic. Everything here is built for permanent outdoor use, weather-sealed and LED-lit, and fixed by our own installation teams — illuminated fascias, built-up letters, light box trays, projecting signs and roadside totems.

The sign gets them through the door. What happens next decides what they spend. Interior signage, wall graphics and counter branding, specified as one scheme so the finishes match the frontage rather than nearly matching it.

Internal Signage details
On the pavement, at the door, and at the counter. Most suppliers only help you with the first one. We design the whole journey, and the signage is where it starts.
The fascia, the projecting sign and the window. Two seconds to say who you are and what you sell.
Built-up lettersEntrance graphics, opening hours, the handrail. Small things that decide whether somebody actually comes in.
Interior signageWall graphics and counter branding that hold the scheme together once they are through the door.
Counter brandingThe menu decides what they spend. Lit boards or digital screens, built around margin rather than price order.
Menu systemsFour stages, one company, one price. Nobody is sub-contracted in the middle of it, which is why we can give you a date and keep it — including in Sheffield.
We come to you in Sheffield. Measure the fascia, check the fixings and the power, photograph the site, and look at the street it trades on. It costs you nothing.
Our designers draw it and visualise it on your building, so you see the sign on your frontage before it is made. We keep designing until you are happy.
Made in our own factory — routing, welding, spraying and LED build. The quality is ours to get right rather than a supplier's.
Our own fitters install it, connect it and clear up. Access equipment included, electrics tested and signed off.
Send us a photo of it and the name above the door. We will tell you what the building will take and what it costs.
Real installs, shot on location. Every one designed, manufactured and fitted by us. Tap any photo to see that type of sign in detail.

Brands we make signs for
Signage for Pret A Manger, Wendy's, Heavenly Desserts, Sushi Mania, FSW and Harry Ramsden's — and for several thousand family businesses, who get the same drawings, the same factory and the same fitters.
We do, in our own factory. Brushed and polished stainless, brass, powder-coated aluminium — face-lit, halo-lit or unlit. On a Sheffield brick or steel-framed building, halo-lit stainless letters are hard to beat and they still look right in ten years.
No. It is forty miles up the M1 and our own fitters do the work. We manufactured it, so if anything does need attention it comes back to us rather than to a supplier you have never spoken to.
It is some of our favourite work. Brick, steel and stone all take fixings differently, and a converted works usually cannot have anything drilled through the good face. We survey the substrate first and specify the fixing before the sign, not after it.
Yes, and we would rather do both. The frontage gets them to the door; what happens inside decides what they spend. Counter branding, wall graphics, menu boards and wayfinding all come off the same drawings.
We manufacture in Nottingham and install UK-wide, so this list is where we work most, not the limit of it. If your site is somewhere else, ask.
“We recently used BD Signs for digital signage in our fish and chip takeaway and couldn't be happier with the result. From the first conversation, when they squeezed us in when we drove down without an appointment, through to installation.”
“A big thank you to the team at BD Signs for all your hard work with our new Digital Menu System. We have 6 screens in total, and a bespoke display box with our branding. I'm quite fussy and particular, and these guys were very helpful from start to finish! Very passionate and customer focused company. Highly recommend!!!”
“Just want to rate George from tech support's service as a 5. Whenever I get through to him he goes above and beyond to support and get the problem sorted quickly and efficiently, he keeps us informed throughout of the problem and where we are with the fix. Great customer service.”
“Used BD Signs Design and Print services to design a new logo for my company and to design and print some large labels to use on my jobs. Professional service from start to finish. Highly recommended.”
“Excellent service as always. Friendly staff. Highly recommend.”
