Built-Up Letters
3D fabricated letters in acrylic or metal, illuminated or plain.
Built-Up Letters detailsBirmingham is the biggest market we work in and the one where a single unit is most often the first of several. A lot of what we do here is not one shopfront. It is a specification that has to survive being built eleven more times.
Fifty miles down the M42 — Birmingham and the wider West Midlands are a standard run.

The range is wide. Digbeth and the Jewellery Quarter are independent, industrial and character-led. Moseley, Kings Heath and Harborne are neighbourhood high streets with real footfall. The Bullring, Broad Street and the Colmore business district are a different discipline again, with landlord specifications, servicing windows and shop-fitting programmes to work inside. Solihull and Sutton Coldfield sit somewhere between.
For a group, consistency is the whole point — the same colour, the same letter depth and the same lighting level in every site, so the eleventh store looks like the first. We draw it once, make it in our own factory and roll it out with our own teams, working to your landlord's hours and your trading pattern rather than ours.
We work across Birmingham and the rest of West Midlands. If your site is somewhere else, ask — we manufacture in Nottingham and install UK-wide.
Two things matter when you buy a sign. That it gets you noticed, and that it still looks like that in ten years. Most of what separates a good sign from a cheap one is in the parts you never see — the gauge of the metal, the weld, the fixings and the lamps. Here is how that plays out on a Birmingham frontage.
On a Birmingham retail park or a drive-through the totem is doing more work than the fascia, because it is the only thing readable at forty miles an hour. Height, contrast and a very short message — and it has to hold up when the sun is behind it as well as in front.
Frontages around the Bullring and Broad Street get knocked, cleaned hard and lit all night. We build for that: heavier gauge where it gets hit, sealed against jet washing, and lighting rated to run continuously rather than for a few hours an evening.
Consistency is a quality problem, not an admin one. The same aluminium gauge, the same RAL, the same letter depth and the same lighting level every time — because the moment a rollout is spread across three suppliers, the colour drifts a shade a site and the brand goes with it.
We make it ourselves, so nobody swaps the stainless for coated steel or the branded LED for something cheaper to protect a margin. You get what is on the drawing. On a multi-site job that is worth more than any discount you will be offered.
Exterior signage takes the weather, the light and the traffic. Everything here is built for permanent outdoor use, weather-sealed and LED-lit, and fixed by our own installation teams — illuminated fascias, built-up letters, light box trays, projecting signs and roadside totems.

Double-sided signs that stand off the wall and catch passing trade.

Traditional sign writing and hand-made pieces, brush in hand.
Hand Painted & Hand Made details
The sign gets them through the door. What happens next decides what they spend. Interior signage, wall graphics and counter branding, specified as one scheme so the finishes match the frontage rather than nearly matching it.

Internal Signage details
On the pavement, at the door, and at the counter. Most suppliers only help you with the first one. We design the whole journey, and the signage is where it starts.
The fascia, the projecting sign and the window. Two seconds to say who you are and what you sell.
Built-up lettersEntrance graphics, opening hours, the handrail. Small things that decide whether somebody actually comes in.
Interior signageWall graphics and counter branding that hold the scheme together once they are through the door.
Counter brandingThe menu decides what they spend. Lit boards or digital screens, built around margin rather than price order.
Menu systemsFour stages, one company, one price. Nobody is sub-contracted in the middle of it, which is why we can give you a date and keep it — including in Birmingham.
We come to you in Birmingham. Measure the fascia, check the fixings and the power, photograph the site, and look at the street it trades on. It costs you nothing.
Our designers draw it and visualise it on your building, so you see the sign on your frontage before it is made. We keep designing until you are happy.
Made in our own factory — routing, welding, spraying and LED build. The quality is ours to get right rather than a supplier's.
Our own fitters install it, connect it and clear up. Access equipment included, electrics tested and signed off.
Send us a photo of it and the name above the door. We will tell you what the building will take and what it costs.
Real installs, shot on location. Every one designed, manufactured and fitted by us. Tap any photo to see that type of sign in detail.

Brands we make signs for
Signage for Pret A Manger, Wendy's, Heavenly Desserts, Sushi Mania, FSW and Harry Ramsden's — and for several thousand family businesses, who get the same drawings, the same factory and the same fitters.
Yes — multi-site is a large part of the business. One survey per site, one set of drawings, one specification, and a schedule that fits your trading hours. Over 4,500 shops are on our books, including national names, so this is the normal shape of the work rather than the exception.
Routinely. We make to national brand standards and shopping centre specifications, match to exact RAL and Pantone references, and submit for approval before anything is cut.
No. Fifty miles down the M42 is a normal day. The survey is free, and it is done by somebody who will still be involved when the sign goes up.
We do, including the groundworks and the electrical supply. On a retail park or a drive-through the totem is doing more work than the fascia, because it is the only thing readable from the road.
We manufacture in Nottingham and install UK-wide, so this list is where we work most, not the limit of it. If your site is somewhere else, ask.
“We recently used BD Signs for digital signage in our fish and chip takeaway and couldn't be happier with the result. From the first conversation, when they squeezed us in when we drove down without an appointment, through to installation.”
“A big thank you to the team at BD Signs for all your hard work with our new Digital Menu System. We have 6 screens in total, and a bespoke display box with our branding. I'm quite fussy and particular, and these guys were very helpful from start to finish! Very passionate and customer focused company. Highly recommend!!!”
“Just want to rate George from tech support's service as a 5. Whenever I get through to him he goes above and beyond to support and get the problem sorted quickly and efficiently, he keeps us informed throughout of the problem and where we are with the fix. Great customer service.”
“Used BD Signs Design and Print services to design a new logo for my company and to design and print some large labels to use on my jobs. Professional service from start to finish. Highly recommended.”
“Excellent service as always. Friendly staff. Highly recommend.”
“Excellent service as normal — have used BD Signs for the last 20 years and they have always been very helpful and delivered on time and on price!”
Bring a photo of your frontage, or a problem you have been putting off for three years. We will survey the site, design it properly, and quote the whole job as one price.
Or email info@bdsigns.co.uk — we answer everything the same working day.
