3D Illuminated Signs & Built-Up Letters in Nottingham
BD Signs makes 3D illuminated signs in Nottingham: built-up letters fabricated one character at a time, lit from the face or as a halo with LED lighting, or left unlit, and fixed straight to the fascia or wall. They are the shop signage most people picture for a frontage, and because every letter is made rather than printed, your brand identity gets real depth, crisp edges and a finish that still looks sharp years later.

Built-Up Letters, made properly
BD Signs fabricates built-up letters in acrylic, aluminium, brass and stainless steel. Acrylic letters are usually face illuminated, with an opal face lit by LEDs inside; metal letters are often halo illuminated, throwing their light back onto the wall; and any of them can be left unlit. Everything is drawn and made in-house in Nottingham, so the kerning, the return depth and the colour match are ours to get right — not a supplier's. Our own teams handle the survey, the manufacture and the sign installation.
- Face-lit, halo-lit or non-illuminated
- Acrylic, aluminium, brass or stainless steel
- Powder-coated to any RAL or Pantone colour
- Fixed to fascias, brickwork, render or interior walls
What should you know before ordering Built-Up letters?
Should built-up letters be face-lit, halo-lit or left unlit?
Face-lit is the most legible after dark, halo-lit looks the most expensive and unlit costs least. Face-lit letters have an opal acrylic face with LEDs inside, so the whole character glows. Halo-lit letters keep a solid face and throw their light back onto the wall, drawing a soft outline. Unlit letters rely on daylight, street lighting and their own shadow, and BD Signs still recommends them for plenty of buildings.
How deep should built-up letters be?
Deep enough to cast a shadow someone across the road can see, but not so deep that a slim typeface turns clumsy. The return — the side of each letter — is what creates that shadow. BD Signs sets it from the letter height and the distance people will read the sign from, instead of using one stock depth for every job.
Can my wall take built-up letters?
Sound brick and render usually can. Old timber fascias, cladding and crumbling pointing need a closer look. Each letter is fixed on its own studs or a hidden rail, so the surface behind matters as much as the letters themselves. BD Signs checks the wall at survey, and would rather raise a problem then than on fitting day.
How does BD Signs make Built-Up letters?
Designed in-house, manufactured in our own factory, fitted by our own teams. 30 years in the industry.
- Step 1
Survey and artwork
BD Signs visits the building, measures the fascia or wall and checks what the fixings will go into. Send your logo alongside, and together we settle the letter height, the material and whether the letters will be face-lit, halo-lit or unlit.
- Step 2
Drawn to scale
Our studio draws the letters onto your frontage at true size, with the return depth, colour and spacing set. Where illuminated letters need advertisement consent, the application drawings are produced from this same design.
- Step 3
Fabrication
Each character is built in our own factory in acrylic, aluminium, brass or stainless steel, and powder-coated to your RAL or Pantone reference where the design calls for it. Lit letters have their LEDs fitted before they leave.
- Step 4
Fitting
Our own teams mark the letters out on the wall, then fix each one on its own studs or a hidden rail so the fixings stay out of sight. The spacing on the building follows the drawing you approved.
Face-lit, halo-lit or non-illuminated: which built-up letters suit your building?
All three start as the same fabricated letter. What changes is where the light goes, how the sign reads after dark and how likely it is to need consent. BD Signs talks customers through it like this.
| Compare | Face-lit | Halo-lit | Non-illuminated |
|---|---|---|---|
| How the light works | LEDs behind an opal acrylic face — the whole letter glows | Solid face, with light thrown back onto the wall behind | No lighting — daylight, street light and shadow |
| After dark | The most legible of the three | A soft outline round each character | Depends on the street lighting |
| Look | Bright and direct | The most premium finish | Clean and understated |
| Usual material | Acrylic | Often stainless steel or brass | Acrylic, aluminium, brass or stainless steel |
| Cost | More than unlit — LEDs and a power supply | More than unlit — LEDs and a power supply | The least of the three |
| Advertisement consent | Frequently needed | Frequently needed | Often not needed on a shopfront |

What do people ask about Built-Up letters?
What are 3D illuminated signs?
3D illuminated signs are signs built from individual raised letters or shapes with LED lighting inside or behind them, so the name stands off the wall and stays readable after dark. The two main kinds are face-lit letters, where the front glows, and halo-lit letters, where light spills onto the wall behind. BD Signs makes both in its Nottingham factory.
Should I choose acrylic or stainless steel built-up letters?
Acrylic suits most face-lit signs; stainless steel and brass suit premium brands and halo lighting. Acrylic is lighter, costs less and comes in any colour. Metal costs more but keeps a sharp edge outdoors for longer, and in BD Signs' experience it usually earns its keep in how the sign still looks years later.
Do built-up letters need planning permission?
Unlit letters on a shopfront often do not. Illuminated letters frequently need advertisement consent from the council, and a conservation area or a listed building brings more control on top. BD Signs checks your position at survey and, if an application is needed, prepares the drawings, so you know where you stand before anything is made.
How much do 3D illuminated signs cost in the UK?
It depends on the letter height, how many letters there are, the material, whether they are face-lit or halo-lit, and how easy the wall is to reach. Lit letters cost more than unlit ones because each needs LEDs and a power supply, and metal costs more than acrylic. BD Signs surveys the site and quotes the whole job, from design to fitting, as one price.
How long do 3D illuminated signs last, and what upkeep do they need?
Built well, the letters themselves last for years; it is the electrics that need occasional attention. LED lighting runs far longer than the fluorescent tubes older signs used, so upkeep is mostly cleaning the faces and, eventually, replacing a power supply rather than the letters. Stainless steel and brass keep a sharp edge outdoors for longest.
How much electricity does an illuminated 3D sign use?
Very little next to older lit signs, because LEDs draw a fraction of the power of fluorescent tubes or neon. What it costs to run depends on how many letters there are, their size and how long the sign stays on. Putting the sign on a timer or a dusk sensor so it is off overnight cuts the running cost further.
What safety rules apply to outdoor 3D illuminated signs?
The wiring has to meet BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, and the sign must be designed and fixed so it stays secure in wind and weather — BS 559 covers the design, construction and installation of signs. The brightness of a lit sign is also limited, and it frequently needs advertisement consent. BD Signs checks all of this at survey.
Can I see built-up letters before I order?
Yes. Every type of sign BD Signs makes is lit on the wall in our 3,500 sq ft Nottingham showroom, so face-lit and halo-lit letters can be compared side by side in person rather than from a photograph. Bring your logo with you and we can talk through sizes while you are there.
