Vinyl Banners

A vinyl banner is the workhorse of temporary signage. It is tough, it rolls up, it takes full colour, and it does the job of a sign for a message that only needs to be up for a season. The finishing decides whether it hangs like a sign or flaps like a sheet.

What you get

Vinyl Banners, done properly

PVC banner material is a woven polyester base coated in vinyl, which is where its strength comes from without much weight. We print it full colour, then finish it for the way it will hang. Every edge is hemmed — folded back and sealed — so it cannot fray and each eyelet grips a double thickness. Eyelets suit ties and bungees on railings, frames and hooks. Pole pockets are sleeves along the top and bottom for a pole or batten, so the banner hangs flat with no ties on show. For inside, a matt material stops the glare that gloss vinyl throws under shop lights.

  • Hemmed edges that stop fraying and strengthen the eyelets
  • Eyelets spaced for cable ties, bungees or rope
  • Pole pockets for a flat hang with no ties on show
  • Gloss outdoor or matt indoor material to suit the site
Before you order

What should you know before ordering vinyl banners?

Eyelets or pole pockets: which finish do you need?

Eyelets if the banner ties onto something; pole pockets if it hangs from something. Eyelets suit railings, fences, frames and walls with hooks, where ties pull the banner tight at every edge. Pole pockets are sleeves along the top and bottom, so a pole or batten slides through and its weight keeps the banner flat. BD Signs finishes each banner for the way it will hang, so tell us before it prints.

Will a vinyl banner stand up to the weather?

Yes, if it is the right material and properly fixed. PVC banner vinyl is waterproof, and outdoor inks are made to resist fading. What usually fails first is the fixing, not the print: a banner tied only at its corners tears at the eyelets in a strong wind. BD Signs hems every edge and puts eyelets all the way round, so the load spreads along the banner instead of hanging on four points.

Does an indoor banner need a different material?

Often, yes. Outdoor PVC has a gloss finish to shed rain, and under shop or hall lighting that gloss throws glare across the lettering. For inside, BD Signs can print on a matt material that reads cleanly from any angle. If the banner moves between a sports hall and a playing field, choose the outdoor material and accept a little shine indoors.

How it is made

How does BD Signs make vinyl banners?

Designed in-house, manufactured in our own factory, fitted by our own teams. 25 years as BD Signs, 35 in brand and point of sale.

  1. Step 1

    Where it hangs

Tell us where the banner is going and what it fixes to: railings, a wall, a frame or a pole. That decides the material, the finish and the eyelet spacing before the artwork is even started.

  2. Step 2

    Artwork inside the margins

Our studio sets your artwork at the finished size with a safe margin inside the hem, so no wording disappears into the fold or behind an eyelet. You approve the proof before anything is printed.

  3. Step 3

    Print on vinyl

The banner is printed in our own factory on PVC banner vinyl — gloss for outdoors, matt for inside — in full colour from edge to edge, with your colours matched to the rest of your print.

  4. Step 4

    Hem, eyelet or pocket

Every edge is hemmed, then eyelets or pole pockets are added to suit the fixing you told us about. The banner arrives ready to tie up or slide onto its pole, with nothing left to finish on site.

Side by side

Should your vinyl banner have eyelets or pole pockets?

Both are printed on the same vinyl and hemmed the same way. The difference is how the banner is held up and what shows around its edges.

Compare Hems & eyelets Pole pockets
Fixing Cable ties, bungees or rope through metal rings A pole, batten or tube slid through a sleeve
Look A tie shows at each eyelet Clean top and bottom edges with nothing on show
Best for Railings, fences, banner frames and walls with hooks Hanging from ceilings, wall brackets and banner poles
Moving it Snip the ties and re-hang it somewhere else Slide it off the pole and roll it up for storage

Vinyl Banners FAQ

What do people ask about vinyl banners?

Is a vinyl banner the same as a PVC banner?

Yes, for anything you will notice. The trade uses both names for the same material: a woven polyester base coated in PVC, which is a type of vinyl. You may also see it called flex or frontlit banner. What matters more than the name is the weight of the material and how the edges are finished, and BD Signs chooses both for where the banner will hang.

How far apart should the eyelets be?

Close enough that the banner cannot billow between them. Around every 50cm is a common spacing on outdoor banners, with one in each corner, and closer than that on a windy site. Indoors, fewer will do. BD Signs sets the spacing to the fixing — the uprights on a railing, the points on a frame — so every eyelet lines up with something to tie it to.

Can a vinyl banner be used again?

Yes, if the message still holds. Take it down dry, roll it with the print facing outwards rather than folding it, and store it somewhere flat; folds leave creases that show the next time it goes up. Keep dates and one-off offers off any banner you mean to reuse. BD Signs can print those on a separate strip, so the main banner keeps working season after season.
